Channel: Periplasm and redox homeostasis

Inspired by: Yilan Liu, Anna Khusnutdinova

Redox homeostasis in the periplasm, the space between the inner and outer membranes of gram-negative bacteria, is vital for cellular integrity. The periplasmic space contains proteins sensitive to the redox environment, including enzymes essential for nutrient uptake and defense against oxidative stress. Redox balance in this compartment ensures efficient biochemical reactions. Disruptions can lead to protein misfolding and impaired cellular functions. Bacteria have systems, like the disulfide isomerase Dsb proteins, to regulate the redox status in the periplasm, ensuring optimal function and adaptability. ChatGPT (CC BY 4.0)
